Except if; used to introduce the case in which a statement being made is not true.
un(=not) + less(=if) → 「もし～でなければ」。
例文
You can't get a driver's license unless you are 18.
18歳でなければ、運転免許は取得できません。
"if ... not" とほぼ同じ意味ですが、"unless" の方がフォーマルで強調的です。
